Iron sand from the Earth, charcoal made from woods in the mountain and high-quality clay to build a furnace with. TATARABUKI iron-making is made possible only by deadly handover of the blessing of the essence of NATURE.
“Wako” (Japanese steel), which has been utilized for Japanese swords since old days, is spiritual, one and only best steel that is never duplicated even with modern technologies. Now, hosted by TANABE Chouemon, the 25-th generation head of the Family, “TATARABUKI” iron-making operation will be carried out.

The Tanabe Family took root in this area in the Muromachi era being engaged in “TATARA iron-making” for business. “TATARA” went cold in the Taisho era as industry, but it is being resurrected producing new value. I sincerely ask you to approve and participate in this “TATARA operation”.

- Participants are expected to bring his/her change of clothes.
※We will lend work clothes to be used during work hours, but the participants are also expected to bring movable clothes which may be stained.
※Safety shoes are recommended. If you have leather gloves and goggles, we will be happy if you bring them.
This TATARA operation is carried out as a part of “Project to develop a village of TATARA iron-making” aiming to promote inheritance of TATARA culture which is pride of Japan, fostering of human resources and regional construction in cooperation with Regional Development Agency Foundation for Historical Village of iron.

- Tour through the garden of the Tanabe familynot open to the public
- The garden of the Tanabe family at the center of Yoshida is usually not open to the public, but this time a tour through the garden is made possible specially.
- The Historical Museum of Iron
- History, technology and tools of TATARA iron-making are exhibited. The movie of the last restoration operation by TATARA operators in 1969 is also screened.
- Sugaya TATARA Sannai
- This is the ruin of the takadono style which still exists in Japan only here. Steelmaking cabin, motogoya, residence of the murage (chief engineer of TATARA operation) etc. are there. You can enjoy seeing the aspect of those old days.
